Piggy Events

The Pigs organize many events including the traditional tours to many exotic locations in Asia and elsewhere. We play a number of charity and social games in Hong Kong with various visiting teams from other countries and on regular occasions with the US Navy while in Hong Kong and R&R. Soemone needs to teach the Septics how to play rugby after all.

We also arrange various social events such as the Annual Christmas Party, the Pink Party at the Doghouse and others.

Charitable Activities

Pot Bellied Pigs Charitable Activities

The memory of Bali has lead the Pigs to add a charity focus to our activities and have since held a number of fund raising events to help the communities across Asia.

The pinnacle of our potted history is holding our very own “Fat Boys 10’s” tournaments in Angeles City, Philippines August 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Bahay Bata We have hosted from 12 to 16 teams from around the region, including:

  • Hong Kong teams such as the Hong Kong Football Club Lu' Vandals and the Old Bill (Police Football Club).
  • Teams from the Philippines itself, such as the Manila Nomads, the Alabang Eagles, The Warrriors, the Philippines Airforce and in 2006, the Cebu Dragons.
  • Teams from Beijing, Thailand, Singapore and Korea
  • Together with players from a very wide geographic spread.

These have been charity events with the two nominated charities being the Bahay Bata Orphanage, a Rotary project for street kids in Angeles and the Philippines Rugby Football Union Development Fund. Through a combination of sponsorship, advertising and donations we were able to donate HK$ 85,000 in 200, HK$150,000 in 2005 and in excess of HK$200,000 in 2006 to these worthy causes.

Following the Tsunami at Christmas 2005 we held several fundraising events.

  • We organized a charity game in February, 05 versus an invitational team from the various Hong Kong rugby clubs.
  • We held a “Pigs on the Piste” charity pub-crawl in Wanchai.
  • Lastly we held a charity auction at the KPMG “Brian Moore” dinner in the lead-up to the World Cup Sevens in March 05.

The first two events raised approximately HK$ 75,000 each, and the auction another HK$ 120,000 towards the Hong Kong Rugby Union Tsunami fund.

Kai Tak Rules

"What goes on tour, stays on tour"...

...just about sums up the 'Kai Tak Rules'. As a member of rugby tour, you may sometimes be privy to information that could be very useful if it fell into the hands of the enemy. You must therefore never discuss anything that happens on a rugby tour after going through immigration at Kai Tak Airport (or Chek Lap Kok for post July '98 tours).

Remember there are also the Shun Tak and Low Wu rules for tours to Macau and Guangdong.

If in doubt - deny, deny, deny, and remember what happened to PB Jonah!

History

THE POT BELLIED PIGS RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
(A potted history)

The Pot Bellied Pigs were formed in 1997 with an initial tour to Manila. The first touring squad consisted entirely of the social players seconded from Hong Kong’s various rugby clubs. In the inaugural game against the Manila Nomads, the Pot Bellied Pigs, living up to the name, fielded a team which included fourteen front row forwards.

Since inception, the Pot Bellied Pigs have gone from strength to strength with a formal club structure established in 2001 and affiliated with the Hong Kong Rugby Union. The Pot Bellied Pigs are now predominantly a touring side drawing on like-minded rugby players from clubs all over Asia and beyond who adhere to the true amateur spirit of the game of rugby union.

The Pot Bellied Pigs attend rugby tournaments held in many cities in Asia, including, Manila, Jakarta, Phuket, Bangkok, Macau, Bali, Pattaya, Seoul, Phnom Penh and Hat Yai. The more social the tournament, the more likely they are to be there. In addition, the Potbellies gather often to host and play games versus rugby teams visiting Hong Kong, as a farewell to departing friends, or for charitable purposes.

The Pot Bellied Pigs are tournament favorites throughout Asia, resplendent in their touring kit, which is different for every tour but is always a combination of the club colours of pink, lime green, yellow and blue. The award of the most “Social” team at the 2004 Manila 10’s illustrates the regard in which the rugby community holds the Pigs.

While the emphasis of the Pot Bellied Pigs is on enjoying a social level of rugby, there is also a very serious commitment to developing the game of rugby union in Asia. The benefits of sponsorship have permitted the Pot Bellied Pigs to undertake the first ever rugby tour to Irian Jaya and to introduce local Chinese students to the wonders of playing rugby.

The Potbellies 25th tour, saw the Pigs return to one of their favorite destinations for the 2002 Bali 10s. Bali 2002 should have been special, being their “Silver tour”, but instead it turned into a nightmare when terrorist bombs destroyed 2 nightclubs and killed 202 people of whom 27 were rugby players in that year’s tournament. The Bali Pigs were extremely fortunate, having just left a restaurant, and were walking toward the clubs when the bombs went off. Had it all happened 30 seconds later the Pigs would certainly have been added to the statistics! As it was, the Pigs did, tragically, lose two members playing with other teams that day with another seriously injured who had joined the referees at a club earlier in the evening

Today, the Pot Bellied Pigs have developed into Asia’s best-known touring side. The migrant nature of ‘ex-pats’ in Hong Kong means that they have members living in all the far-flung corners of the world, from the Ukraine to Texas and from the Orkney Islands to Tasmania. These absent Pigs do their best to attend at least one tour a year

Nick Villeperieux Memorial

One of the founding fathers of the Potbellied Pigs, Nick VP sadly passed away in 2010 losing a battle to cancer. His memory lives on through his wife, his daughter and throuh the Pigs. Rest well big fella from all your friends and family.

Potbellied Pigs Fat Boy Tens
